The German company Quantum Systems has upgraded its Vector reconnaissance drone to counter interceptors.
The company announced this on LinkedIn.
One visual change is the drone’s yellow fuselage, which is harder to spot against the backdrop of dry Ukrainian fields in the summer.
The drone has also been equipped with a rear-facing thermal imaging camera that detects interceptors approaching from behind.
The onboard artificial intelligence recognizes the target and autonomously performs an evasive maneuver without operator intervention.
As a reminder, in March of this year, a program was launched to retrofit Ukrainian Vector drones with these countermeasure modules.
According to Oleksandr Berezhnyi, managing director of Quantum Systems in Ukraine, the company is implementing three drone modernization programs.
First, the drones will be equipped with an artificial intelligence system. For that very reason, the nose section of the drones will be replaced.
Subsequently, modules for evading enemy interceptor drones will be installed.
The final program involves replacing the batteries with new ones that offer extended flight time.
These upgrades apply to previous-generation Vector drones. Deliveries of new drones, including the Vector AI, which comes with an evasion module already installed in Germany, began in April.
Quantum Systems has also upgraded its long-range reconnaissance UAV, Reliant, which now has increased payload capacity and broader mission capabilities.
