Ukraine will receive another Patriot air defense system this summer, a unit decommissioned by the Israeli military and refurbished in the United States.
The New York Times reported this news, citing its own unnamed sources.
According to the NYT, Western allies are also discussing logistics to persuade Germany or Greece to provide an additional system.
However, the possibility of another transfer from Germany appears unlikely, as Berlin has already delivered three of its ten Patriot systems to Ukraine and has not yet received replacement units on order.
Officials, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the talks, declined to say whether President Donald Trump supported the transfer of more Patriot systems or whether the decision had been finalized before he took office during the Biden administration.
However, it is reported that in mid-March, Trump promised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky he would help find more Patriot systems for Ukraine.
The U.S. Department of Defense stated it “continues to provide Ukraine with equipment from previously authorized” packages, referencing both drawdowns from existing stockpiles and new procurements.
Ukraine has so far received eight Patriot systems as part of Western military aid — three from the United States, three from Germany, one from Romania, and one from the Netherlands.
According to The New York Times, six of these are operational, while the other two are undergoing repairs.
With the expected delivery of one Israeli system and a possible additional unit from Germany or Greece, Ukraine could soon have a total of ten systems — the number Zelensky has said is needed to counter Russian ballistic missile threats.
It is worth noting that not only the nominal number of systems, but also their ammunition supply, is of crucial importance.
Two U.S. officials shared that the ninth system, transferred from Israel and refurbished in the U.S., is expected to arrive in Ukraine this summer.
Talks about transferring decommissioned Israeli Patriot systems to Ukraine began in June 2024, following reports in April that Israel had started phasing out its Patriots. More advanced Israeli-made air defense platforms, including David’s Sling and the Iron Dome, are replacing the systems.
In January 2025, it was confirmed that Israel had shipped decommissioned Patriot batteries to the United States.
