The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a defense budget bill for 2026 totaling $892.6 billion.
The document outlines key areas of funding for the country’s defense needs and allocates resources to support its allies.
According to The New York Times, $400 million is earmarked for Ukraine. These funds will go toward the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI).
231 members of Congress supported the bill, while 196 members of the House voted against it.
Four Republicans voted against the bill, while 17 Democrats joined Republicans in voting in favor.
Traditionally, the defense budget has been adopted with broader bipartisan support, but this time, the vote revealed significant divisions among lawmakers.
Members of Congress also rejected an amendment proposed by Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, which sought to reduce aid to Ukraine.
Additionally, the bill includes a provision requiring the Pentagon to report to Congress if there is any attempt to cancel or suspend military assistance to Kyiv.
This clause reflects Congress’s intent to strengthen oversight of the executive branch, following a summer incident in which the U.S. Department of Defense temporarily paused weapons deliveries to Ukraine without notifying lawmakers in advance.
Ukrainian diplomat Vadym Prystaiko stated that if Kyiv aims to attain a strategic partnership status similar to that of Israel, U.S. security guarantees must include annual defense funding.
The adopted bill not only outlines the size of the U.S. defense budget but also lays the groundwork for continued military cooperation with Ukraine.
As early as the beginning of September, it was confirmed that the U.S. would continue contracting weapons for Ukraine under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI).
