Ukraine has developed and successfully tested a drone-based interceptor designed to neutralize Russian Shahed attack drones.
The system was trialed over the Kyiv region for a month, according to Strategic Industries Minister Herman Smetanin, who spoke at the “Ukrainian Weapons 2024” briefing attended by Militarnyi.
Following successful tests, the project will now be scaled up and deployed to other regions.
“This is a promising case for drone-based air defense,” said Smetanin. “Our production capabilities allow us to scale it further.”
One version of the system was recently presented to visiting Belgian officials, including Prime Minister Bart De Wever, during his trip to Kyiv.
According to the developers, the drone has reportedly downed more than 20 Shahed drones over the past two months.
It can also be deployed against smaller reconnaissance UAVs.
While detailed technical specifications remain classified, developers disclosed that the system has a top speed of 200 km/h and can operate at altitudes of up to 5 km.
In addition to the drone tested near Kyiv, Ukrainian forces are operating at least one other interceptor design.
This second model features a cross-shaped rear wing and forward-mounted rudders for maneuverability.
It is powered by a rear-mounted three-blade propeller. The drone appears to carry various sensor and payload modules, including what may be a camera or warhead, secured with insulating tape. The presence of a dedicated targeting unit is also suspected.
