In 2026, Ukraine will need large-scale arms supplies from outside the European Union — at least $27 billion.

This primarily concerns American systems that are critical to the country’s defense, according to the Kyiv Independent.

The European Union has allocated €60 billion in military support to Ukraine over two years, but a significant portion of these funds may be used to purchase weapons from the US.

The reason is that the EU is unable to produce key systems quickly enough or in the required quantities.

Patriot PAC-3, the most effective system against Russian ballistic missiles, plays a special role. Ukraine emphasizes that these systems have no substitute. The Franco-Italian SAMP/T remains less effective.

In addition to air defense, the country needs ammunition and components for the F-16s already in service. A significant part of its defense capabilities is also based on American intelligence and satellite technologies, which have no analogues in Europe.

According to EU estimates, Ukraine’s total military aid needs for 2026–2027 amount to €135 billion. The December support package covers two-thirds of this amount, but the remaining amount depends on allies, primarily the US, providing the Ukrainian army with modern weapons.
