The Pentagon believes that ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles are currently unnecessary for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The United States is focused on increasing the supply of GMLRS guided rockets with a range of up to 84 kilometers.
This was stated by US Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Colin Kahl during the briefing.
The US Department of Defense consults with Kyiv about the current needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine at the front.
The deputy minister noted that Ukrainians have been using hundreds of GMLRS to receive “extraordinary effect on the battlefield.”
“It’s our assessment that the most relevant munitions for the current fight are the GMLRS.
And so, we have prioritized getting the Ukrainians, the GMLRS they need, not only to hold (Russians – Ed.) in the east, but may generate some momentum elsewhere in the country,” Kahl said.
A senior Pentagon official noted that the US is focusing on providing the GMLRS through military aid packages.
“So, the most recent – so we’ve (USA – Ed.) – in every – just about every PDA package, we have provided a steady stream of GMLRS — hundreds and hundreds at a time.
It’s our assessment that the Ukrainian stocks of GMLRS are pretty good right now. And we’re going to continue to provide those,” Colin Kahl emphasized.
The ATACMS (Army Tactical Missile System) missile system is designed to hit point targets such as command posts, missile launchers, air defense facilities, communication nodes, and depots located deep within the enemy’s defenses.
The M270 and M142 launchers are used to launch the missile. The system has an MGM-140B missile with a maximum flight range of up to 300.
The GMLRS is a family of American 227 mm guided missiles. These munitions are classified as high-precision and are used for the HIMARS and M270 systems.
