The United States has approved the transfer of 12 M36 PUMA armored vehicles to the Côte d’Ivoire Army.
The U.S. Africa Command has already begun training the Ivorian military for these armored vehicles.
The training focuses on equipping drivers and mechanics with the skills necessary for operating and maintaining these armored vehicles for the long term.
“The training covers safe driving practices, preventive maintenance, and comprehensive repair procedures,” the U.S. shared.
The delivery of these armored personnel carriers and the accompanying training marks a partnership between the United States and Côte d’Ivoire.
At the same time, in 2024, the Pentagon identified Côte d’Ivoire as a potential location for new Navy bases.
The decision was made after the announcement of the closure of bases in Niger.
The new military infrastructure will be used to fight terrorism, maritime piracy, and cross-border smuggling in Africa.
Puma M36 belongs to the MRAP class of armored vehicles (with mine protection level 4b) with ballistic protection according to STANAG 4569.
The armored vehicle is based on an Indian truck manufactured by Ashok Leyland.
The power plant is a 6-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine Ashok Leyland HA 57L 165 with a capacity of 220 horsepower. The transmission is a manual ZF 6S 850 GB with six forward and one reverse gear. As standard, the South African Puma M36 armored vehicle has air conditioning, power steering, and individual special mine protection seats.
This is not the first time the United States has provided these armored vehicles to African countries. In 2022, the United States provided 24 M36 Puma armored vehicles to support allied forces in Somalia.
