Embraer has announced an expansion of the capabilities of its A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircraft, which will now be equipped for counter-drone operations.

The company said the upgrade relies mainly on existing sensors and systems, so it does not require major changes to the aircraft’s design.

The enhancement is available to both current and future A-29 operators.

Embraer engineers have integrated special communication channels into the weapons control system to provide initial target coordinates and guidance, allowing the A-29 to respond quickly to enemy drones.

The aircraft is also fitted with an electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) sensor for laser tracking and target illumination, as well as laser-guided missiles and .50-caliber wing-mounted machine guns for engaging drones.

The concept developed by Embraer enables pilots to conduct counter-drone missions within standard combat profiles without the need for specialized platforms.

“We are constantly improving the A-29 to meet the most pressing challenges faced by states around the world,” Embraer Defense & Security reported.

Company representatives noted that recent conflicts have shown drones are an increasingly significant threat in combat operations, and armed forces require effective countermeasures.

Embraer said the A-29 Super Tucano is particularly well-suited for countering drones due to its efficiency and low operating costs.

In addition to counter-drone missions, the Super Tucano performs a wide range of roles, from close air support and reconnaissance to pilot and air gunner training.

The aircraft’s versatility and robust design allow it to operate from unprepared runways and field bases under challenging conditions.

The A-29 is also used for patrol, interception, border control, surveillance, and target tracking. Twenty-two countries have selected it.

In August, a modernized Z-137 AgroTurbo light aircraft equipped with air-to-air missiles was spotted in Ukrainian airspace.
