A Russian assault group tried to break through the state border and seize territory in the rear of the Ukrainian group in the Kursk region.
The press service of the 78th Air Assault Regiment released the video of the combat operation.
The Russian military in two BMP-2 combat vehicles moved to break through the fence line built on the border of the Sumy region but suffered losses before reaching it.
The lead vehicle of the occupiers’ convoy exploded on a PTM-3 anti-tank mine, which was remotely installed by a paratrooper drone. After that, the Russian soldiers hurried up and quickly retreated, leaving both vehicles in the field.
The video captures serious engineering obstacles, such as an anti-tank ditch and barbed wire strips, which were later additionally mined by the 78th Airborne Brigade’s drone operators.
Geoint researchers have located the site of the failed Russian troop breakthrough north of the village of Zhuravka in the Khotyn community in the Sumy region (here).
The purpose and objectives of the rather small assault group remain unknown. It can be assumed that these actions were intended to divert Ukrainian troops from the Kursk region to protect the group’s left flank.
It is also possible that the Russian military command was also performing purely propaganda tasks in the interests of the Russian political leadership. Only a day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the allegedly successful breakthrough of Russian troops into Ukraine from the Kursk region.
“The latest information that was reported to me just an hour ago: last night, the soldiers of the 810th Brigade crossed the border of the Russian Federation and Ukraine and entered the enemy’s territory,” Putin told reporters in St. Petersburg.
Last week, a large-scale assault operation sent about a company of infantrymen, supported by more than ten tanks, on the offensive through minefields. They attacked under the flags of the Soviet Union, which were used on almost all armored vehicles.
The Russian command developed an offensive plan that envisioned an attack in two waves with a pause between them. First, the units were to exhaust the Ukrainian defense, forcing the defenders to let their guard down through a feigned retreat. The second wave, consisting of the 155th Marine Brigade, was supposed to break through the allegedly weakened positions.
However, this plan was a failure: instead of a short pause between attacks, a full day passed, giving the Ukrainian forces a chance to rest. The second assault started in the afternoon in clear weather, which allowed the Ukrainian military to spot the enemy in advance and plan their response.
