Russia launched multiple cyberattacks on Poland’s energy sector late last year in an attempt to cut off electricity supplies.
Krzysztof Gawkowski, Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs, reported this in an interview with RMF24.
According to him, the attacks took place in late December 2025, when the country was on the verge of a nationwide blackout.
He noted that the situation was difficult to manage due to the scale of the attacks and harsh weather conditions.
“This was the most serious attack on energy infrastructure, aimed at shutting off electricity to citizens at the end of December,” Gawkowski shared.
The Deputy Prime Minister noted that Poland is dealing with Russian hacker activity.
“Everything indicates that we are dealing with Russian sabotage – it should be called by its real name – aimed at destabilizing the situation in Poland,” the politician clarified.
Previously, Polish Energy Minister Miłosz Motyka reported that unsuccessful cyberattacks on several electricity-generating facilities took place in the final days of 2025.
Last August, it was reported that Russian hackers attacked a hydroelectric power plant in the Pomeranian Voivodeship near Gdańsk.
They did what they typically do in most attacks: set operating parameters to the minimum or maximum possible values. As a result, the generator and rotor shut down.
Poland’s automation systems that control critical infrastructure are also regularly targeted by hackers.
In November, Polish authorities detained a 23-year-old Russian citizen suspected of interfering with the IT systems of Polish and European companies.
