The Conro Trader railway ferry, which provided fuel to the Russian invaders in Crimea, sank in the Russian port of Kavkaz, located on the Taman Peninsula.
The so-called operational headquarters of Krasnodar Krai of the Russian Federation announced this on Thursday evening, August 22.
Russian propaganda outlets claimed that the ferry was allegedly hit by a Ukrainian Neptune anti-ship missile. The Ukrainian side has not officially commented on the incident.
To fight a large-scale fire that broke out on a ferry in the port of Kavkaz, a fire train and more than 100 people, and 34 units of equipment were sent to the scene.
But this did not help save the Russian ship, which was previously actively used by the Russians to supply their group of troops on the temporarily occupied peninsula.
“As a result of the damage, the ferry sank in the waters of the Kavkaz port. There are no fires on the territory of the port itself,” the so-called operational headquarters stated.
The head of the Temryuksky district of Krasnodar Krai, where the Kavkaz port is located, said that at the time of the attack, the ferry was carrying 30 tanks of fuel. There were also crew members on board.
Later, the governor of the region, Veniamin Kondratyev, said that 17 crew members had been rescued and that two more people were being searched for.
The Ukrainian military command has not provided any official information about the destruction of the ship.
The ship was important for Russian logistics: it was the only large ferry that ran between occupied Kerch and Russia.
This is not the first time that the Russian Conro Trader railway ferry has been attacked.
The previous time, it was hit by an ATACMS ballistic missile on the night of May 30, near the berth of the Kerch Sea Fishing Port. However, it was not critically damaged.
