The Russian company Bureau 1440 has tested laser communication between satellites in space, which is intended to become an analog of Starlink.
The company said that tests of satellites of its own development had turned out to be successful.
“We have successfully completed the first series of tests of laser inter-satellite communications of our own design,” the company says.
It is noted that allegedly more than 200 GB had been transferred at a speed of 10 Gbps between spacecraft with a distance of more than 30 km from each other.
At the same time, the average bit error rate (BER) was less than 10e^-11, which is comparable to fiber optic links.
For the company, this is “the earliest, but extremely important stage of confirming the performance and potential of one of the company’s promising technologies.”
At the same time, the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation commented on the Bureau 1440 tests, noting that with this technology, satellite Internet and communications would be available without interruption in the most remote corners of Russia.
This technology will also provide Russians with communication in places where it is impossible to install ground base stations.
Previously, the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation reported that the Russian company Biuro 1440 had launched three low-orbit communication satellites.
According to the agency, the devices are the first to use 5G communication. It took less than 14 months to develop the devices.
Russia is trying to create a satellite grouping similar to Starlink. In 2024, Vladimir Putin instructed to allocate 116 billion rubles for the development of high-speed satellite Internet over the next decade.
However, the actual total cost of Biuro 1440 should be at least $7 billion (644 billion rubles). The declared 116 billion rubles will be enough for 20% co-financing of the Rassvet project.
