Around the time President Joe Biden was in Ukraine on Monday, Russia conducted a test of a Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile that appears to have failed.

CNN reported this with reference to two officials familiar with the matter.

According to one official, the Russian Federation informed the USA about the launch in advance through deconfliction lines.

Another official claimed that the test did not pose a risk and that the US did not view the test as an anomaly or an escalation.

In addition, the media emphasizes that the test of the heavy Sarmat missile appears to have failed. If the launch had been successful, Russian President Putin would have highlighted it in his speech.

Instead, he made no mention of the launch in the speech. He did, however, formally declare that Russia will be suspending his country’s participation in the New START nuclear arms reduction treaty with the United States.

The publication emphasizes that Putin had announced successful ICBM tests in the past, including last April. That test was also for the Sarmat missile.

However, even last year, US experts noted that the missile launches were not a surprise and were not considered a threat to the United States.

Those tests were perceived as an attempt to divert attention from the military failures of the Russian Federation, such as the sinking of the Russian cruiser Moskva.

Sarmat is an intercontinental ballistic missile, which, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense, can carry a nuclear charge of 8 megatons for 18 thousand kilometers, hit targets anywhere in the world, and evade any missile defense.

As previously reported, in January of this year, Russian media reported on the manufacture of the first batch of Poseidon nuclear torpedoes.
