Russia Deploys Destroyer Admiral Levchenko to Baltic Sea, Reportedly to Escort “Shadow Fleet”

Russia has redeployed the Northern Fleet destroyer Admiral Levchenko from the Barents Sea to the Baltic Sea.

According to the German newspaper Kieler Nachrichten, whose journalists spotted the vessel off the coast of Germany, the ship was observed near the German island of Fehmarn, Deutsche Welle reports.

According to the newspaper, one of the largest warships of Russia’s Northern Fleet passed the German island of Fehmarn on July 31.

A photograph of the Admiral Levchenko north of the German city of Rostock was also published by the German naval industry outlet Marine Forum Online.

The redeployment of the warship from the Barents Sea to the Baltic Sea is believed to be linked to the need to protect vessels belonging to Russia’s “shadow fleet.”

The Project 1155 destroyer is designed to detect and destroy submarines. It has a full displacement of more than 7,500 tonnes and is equipped with guided missile and torpedo weaponry.

The vessel is also designed to carry two Ka-27 anti-submarine helicopters, housed in separate hangars.
