Russia has announced that it has already sent its new portable anti-drone air defense missile system “Hermes” for combat testing.

Several prototypes of the system have been sent for testing in a combat zone, according to TASS.

Since development began, this air defense system has reportedly undergone numerous design changes.

What is claimed to have been changed in the Hermes MANPADS

In particular, the developers claim to have improved the aerodynamic characteristics of the missile.

The fuel compartment has also been redesigned, which should improve flight stability.

According to the Russian side, the system has become more controllable during use.

The modernization of the launcher is noted separately.

Previously designed for three launches, its ammunition load has now allegedly been increased to five missiles.

It is expected that tests in combat conditions will allow the real characteristics of the system to be assessed.

The PPZRK is planned to be launched for mass sale or serial production only after the entire test cycle has been completed.

The Russian Federation claims that this approach should ensure that the troops receive the most “effective and proven” system possible.

At the same time, the actual combat capabilities of Hermes and its effectiveness against modern air targets remain unconfirmed by independent sources.

What is known about Hermes:

  • First mentions of the system – in September 2025
  • Type: portable short-range system for intercepting drones and low-flying helicopters
  • Guidance system based on machine vision
  • Special Hermes communication channel (designed to adapt to changes in the combat situation)
  • Target acquisition range: up to 500 meters
  • Weight of the complex – about 1.2 kg
  • Weapon – VOG-25 ammunition.

The stated characteristics have not yet been confirmed by independent sources.

As a reminder, Russia recently armed itself with the Zubr anti-aircraft system to combat drones.
