Romania destroyed a naval drone carrying explosives near the Neptun Deep gas field in the Black Sea. The object was detected just a few hundred meters from critical infrastructure.
Romanian Defense Minister Radu Miruță announced the incident, Reuters reports.
The drone was destroyed by a Romanian F-16 fighter jet using its 20mm M61 Vulcan autocannon. The remaining debris from the drone was subsequently eliminated by a vessel that arrived at the scene.
The defense minister did not specify the origin of the device, adding only that Ukraine had confirmed that its forces were not involved in the incident.
Romanian President Nicușor Dan accused Russia of orchestrating the incident and condemned the increasing number of such provocations in the Black Sea.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, for her part, said the incident was part of an escalating campaign by Russia.

The Neptun Deep gas project, jointly owned by OMV Petrom and Romgaz, is expected to make Romania the largest gas producer in the European Union once production begins in 2027.
