German radar manufacturer Hensoldt has announced the expansion of its production facilities by opening a new site near Ulm in southern Germany.
The company plans to convert a leased industrial building, Hartpunkt reports.
The lease agreement has already been signed, and the project will involve an average double-digit amount of millions of euros.
The main goal of the new site is the mass production of radars for air defense and anti-drone systems. Starting in 2027, the company plans to produce about 1,000 radars annually.
In July 2025, Hensoldt received a large order to supply radars to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense.
As part of a comprehensive order package worth more than €340 million, Hensoldt will deliver high-performance TRML-4D radars and SPEXER 2000 3D Mk.III short-range radars.
The TRML-4D is based on the latest AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar technology and is part of the IRIS-T SLM air defense missile system used by Ukraine.
It provides fast detection and tracking of up to 1500 targets within a radius of 250 km.
The radar is capable of quickly and reliably detecting, tracking and classifying all types of air targets, including cruise missiles, drones, airplanes and helicopters.
The SPEXER series of radars includes a range of different viewing systems for automatic detection and classification of ground, sea and low-altitude air targets.
SPEXER 2000 is also part of the new Skyranger 30 air defense gun system from Rheinmetall.
This radar is also used in the German Feldlager unmanned missile systems (ASUL), in qualified air defense systems, and in the HoWiSM project, a high-energy laser for fighting drones.
