Poland has reinforced a brigade deployed near the border with Russia’s Kaliningrad region with K2 Black Panther tanks.

The 15th Zawiszak Mechanized Brigade, one of the key combat units of the Polish Army, received a new batch of Korean tanks.

It is deployed in the northeast of the country, in the city of Gieżycko (Warmia and Mazury), near the border with the Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation.

The brigade subordinates to the 16th Mechanized Division.

Its main task is to defend NATO’s eastern flank and deter threats from Russia and Belarus.

The brigade’s location is strategically important – it covers the so-called Suwalki Corridor, a narrow isthmus between Lithuania and Poland that could become a critical battlefield in the event of an escalation by Russia and Belarus.

Until recently, the brigade used modernized T-72 and PT-91 Twardy tanks. However, between 2023 and 2024, it started receiving the latest K2 Black Panther, South Korean main battle tanks purchased by Poland.

The Polish Ministry of Defense handed over the T-72 and PT-91 Twardy tanks to the Armed Forces of Ukraine to protect them from Russian aggression.

It is expected that in 2025, Poland will receive 96 more K2 Black Panther tanks. In addition, on August 1, Poland signed an executive contract for the supply of 180 more South Korean K2 tanks. Of these, 64 units will be produced in the K2PL modification, which is adapted to the needs of the Polish army.

The K2 Black Panther main battle tank weighs about 55 tons and has a crew of three. Its main armament is a 120-mm smoothbore gun with automatic loading, which provides a high rate of fire and increases combat effectiveness.

The tank is equipped with a 1500 hp diesel engine, which allows it to reach speeds of up to 70 km/h on the highway and move confidently over rough terrain. The range is about 450 km.

Among the main advantages of the K2 are modern electronic systems: automated fire control, active missile defense, as well as advanced communication and surveillance systems that allow it to effectively detect and neutralize threats on the battlefield.
