The Pentagon’s Inspector General has found that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth jeopardized the US mission when he used Signal to transmit information about a military strike against the Houthis in Yemen.
The message was sent several hours before the strikes via an unsecured network, contrary to Defense Department policy, the Inspector General’s report said.
It also noted that if the information had reached the Houthis, they could have evaded the strikes or regrouped their forces.
This could have led to the failure of the mission and jeopardized the lives of the American pilots.
The inspection emphasized that Hegseth violated the rules for using personal devices for official data.
At the same time, they noted that Pete Hegseth has the right to declassify materials, and the report did not find that he did so improperly, the Associated Press reports.
After the incident, the Pentagon was recommended to strengthen cybersecurity training for officials.
The situation became public after The Atlantic’s editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg said he was added to a chat room discussing strikes on Yemen.
As a reminder, the US Director of Intelligence recently declassified a CIA spy in Russia.
