More than 1,500 applications have already been submitted to the Ukrainian Legion, which is being formed in Poland.
This was stated by the Consul General of Ukraine in Lublin, Oleh Kuts, in the program “Ukrainian Focus” on Slawa.tv.
According to the Consul General, the applications have come from beyond Europe, with three groups of volunteers—both men and women—already joining the Legion.
In addition, the Consul General said that Ukraine wants to extend the experience of creating such recruiting centers to other partners, currently in Europe.
In July 2024, it was reported that the Czech Republic was considering the possibility of creating a Ukrainian Legion based on the example of the Polish project.
The existence of such a legion, in his opinion, also helps to counter disinformation. Many Ukrainians abroad, relying on unverified sources, may fear that joining the Armed Forces of Ukraine would mean inadequate training or equipment and immediate deployment to the front lines. The Ukrainian Legion, formed under NATO standards, aims to address these concerns.
“The Ukrainian Legion is the first volunteer unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine formed from Ukrainians living abroad.
The Legion opened recruitment in early October 2024 and offers service exclusively on a contract basis. The unit is being formed in Poland, and training is being conducted by NATO instructors at the training grounds of partner countries.
As early as November 2024, the first volunteers of the Ukrainian Legion took the military oath of allegiance to the Ukrainian people.
Candidates with Ukrainian passports are invited to a recruiting center for an interview with the commander, during which the position is determined, documents are checked, and a referral for a medical examination is issued. If the medical examination is successful, the volunteer receives a contract signing date, usually two weeks after all checks are completed.
In January 2025, it was reported that the unit received about 1,300 applications for service. Most of the new volunteers live in Poland, but there are also Ukrainian citizens from Denmark, the Czech Republic, Germany, Lithuania, and other European countries.
Interested candidates can apply online by filling out a questionnaire on the Ukrainian Legion website.
