Former U.S. presidential envoy Keith Kellogg said there may be a need to create military alliances as alternatives to NATO.

In an interview on Fox News, he sharply criticized NATO members for failing to address the conflict in Iran.

Kellogg suggested that the United States might benefit from working with different defense partners.

“NATO has proven to be timid. Maybe we need to create a new NATO – a new defense structure,” he said.

Kellogg also proposed alternative alliance options.

“Either reshape existing defense alliances or create a new one – with Japan and Australia, as well as some European countries willing to fight, such as Germany, which is becoming more active again, or Poland. Even Ukraine, which has proven to be a reliable ally,” he emphasized.

In the context of a possible withdrawal from NATO, he mentioned Article 13 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which allows any member state to leave the Alliance one year after formally notifying its denunciation.

Trump’s position on NATO

Donald Trump is currently seriously considering the possibility of the United States withdrawing from NATO, as the Alliance has refused to join the war against Iran.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also stated that America may ‘reconsider’ its NATO membership after the end of the war in Iran.

The U.S. President asked NATO to help ensure security in the Strait of Hormuz. Following the launch of a U.S. and Israeli military operation on February 28, Iran effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the global ocean.

The strait is strategically important, as oil from Persian Gulf countries is transported through it to global markets.

Several European NATO member states said they are willing to consider providing assistance after the conflict ends, while others firmly rejected the request.
