The British security service MI5 has issued an official warning about the growing espionage activity of China, Russia, and Iran, aimed at politicians, civil servants, and parliamentary staff.
According to Bloomberg, the document was prepared jointly with the National Infrastructure Protection Agency (NPSA) as part of the Countering Espionage and Foreign Interference program aimed at detecting and countering foreign influence.
The report states that the UK is a “target of long-term strategic interference” by states seeking to weaken its democratic institutions, economy, and international standing.
MI5 lists cyberattacks, financial manipulation, recruitment through social media, and bribery of political figures as the primary methods of pressure.
Foreign agents target MPs, advisors, candidates, local officials, and even their family members.
Adversaries are interested in information that could influence political decisions or be used to discredit the government.
“Be vigilant, trust your intuition, and report suspicious contacts to the security service. Everyone who works for British democracy must act today to protect it – and themselves,” MI5 Director Ken McCallum emphasized.
Recently, a security officer with access to international diplomatic circles was arrested in Belgium on charges of spying for China.
