The American company Lockheed Martin has developed a new, low-cost interceptor missile for the Patriot air defense system—the PAC-3 ACE.

The missile is positioned as a lower-cost alternative to the already well-known PAC-3 MSE, which has proven itself effective in intercepting Russian ballistic missiles.
“A cost-effective interceptor designed to counter a wide range of air and missile threats at less than half the unit cost of the PAC-3 MSE,” the company’s statement reads.
The missile was unveiled at the 2026 Farnborough International Airshow, which took place from July 20 to 24.
The developers state that despite the lower cost, the missile uses the existing PAC-3 fire control system and fully integrates with the Patriot air defense system and the Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS), which should reduce the time required for development, testing, and mass production.
The company stated that it plans to quickly launch production of the new missile by leveraging existing technologies and manufacturing capabilities.

The development of this new variant was driven by the rapid growth in demand for air defense systems and the need to quickly replenish stocks of interceptor missiles. As of today, the purchase price of PAC-3 MSE missiles is around $3–4 million; given that the PAC-3 ACE is said to be half the price, its approximate price could be around $1.5–2 million.
The extensive use of the Patriot air defense system to defend Ukraine against Russian ballistic missiles, as well as the growing global demand for such systems, is forcing manufacturers to seek cheaper and simpler-to-produce solutions.
At this time, the developers have not provided detailed information regarding the missile’s specifications, such as range and guidance systems. However, given its anti-missile capabilities, the missile likely retains the same active homing seeker for effectively engaging ballistic targets.
According to the rendering, the new PAC-3 ACE missile visually mirrors the already familiar PAC-3 MSE, except for the absence of ramjet engines. The missile was designed for a rather challenging task—intercepting short- and medium-range ballistic missiles during their terminal flight phase—which requires high precision, rapid data processing, and high maneuverability, all of which the developers have successfully achieved.
Amid growing interest worldwide in the development of hypersonic weapons, American experts at Lockheed Martin have developed an improved version of the PAC-3 MSE interceptor. The new missile is larger and features a new rocket engine, thanks to which its claimed interception range for air targets is up to 120 km, and for ballistic missiles—up to 60 km.
Due to its larger size, the launcher can accommodate 12 transport-launch containers with PAC-3 MSE missiles or be combined with other versions.
The missile retains the active homing seeker found on the standard PAC-3 version. In order to improve flight performance, a more powerful engine was used, which increased the interception range for both aerodynamic and aerial targets.
