The Canadian military has developed a model of a hypothetical invasion by the United States Army and the country’s possible response.
According to two senior government officials, the scenario involves tactics similar to those used by Afghan mujahideen against Soviet troops and later against NATO forces in Afghanistan, reports The Globe and Mail.
This is the first time in over a century that Canada has modeled an American attack. At the same time, officials emphasize that the likelihood of a real invasion is low, and the development is conceptual in nature and not a plan of action.
Military planners assume that the US could break through Canadian defenses on land and at sea within a few days. Due to limited resources and the size of its army, Canada is considering the option of waging a guerrilla war.
One official noted that the model includes the use of methods employed by the mujahideen in the war against the USSR in 1979-1989, as well as by the Taliban against US and allied forces. The goal of such actions is to inflict significant losses on the occupying forces and make it difficult for them to hold the territory.
Chief of Defense Staff General Jenny Carignan announced plans to create a reserve of more than 400,000 volunteers who could be called upon to defend the country in the event of an escalation. According to estimates by the Ministry of Defense, the country will have a maximum of three months to prepare for a possible invasion.
In the event of a breakdown in cooperation within NORAD, Canada may turn to France or the United Kingdom for assistance.
