The Italian defense company Leonardo S.p.A. plans to test its latest Michelangelo air defense system in Ukraine.
The publication Breaking Defense reported on this.
According to the company’s CEO, Roberto Cingolani, tests in real combat conditions could begin by the end of 2026.
The first component of the Michelangelo protective ‘dome’ is already being built specifically for Ukrainian partners.
One of the key features of the system is its open architecture, which allows the creation of protected zones with a radius of 10–15 kilometers. Cingolani said the network can be expanded depending on operational needs.
After its combat debut in Ukraine, Leonardo S.p.A. plans to conduct official tests of the Michelangelo Dome system within NATO in 2027.
These tests will include intercepting ballistic missile attacks and integrating the system into the pan-European air defense command and control structure.
The company expects the Michelangelo program to generate about €21 billion by 2035. Representatives from 20 countries have already expressed interest in purchasing the Italian ‘dome.’
The Michelangelo system uses sensors and predictive algorithms to detect suspicious activity early and enable the most effective response.
It is also worth noting that at the end of January, Leonardo presented in Brescia a concept for ground-based counter-UAV operations based on naval artillery systems.
The project is called Hystrix, which translates from Latin as ‘hedgehog’ and symbolizes 360-degree circular protection.
It uses the 76/62 Super Rapid naval turret as its core component.
