Latvia’s Eastern Border to Be Equipped with Anti-Drone Systems by the End of September 2026

By the end of September this year, the entire eastern border of Latvia is scheduled to be equipped with automated anti-drone systems.

Raivis Melnis, the country’s Minister of Defense, announced this during an appearance on the Morning Panorama program on Latvian television, according to LSM.

To achieve this goal, Latvia needs to procure and integrate radar and command systems; negotiations regarding their purchase are currently underway with one of the countries.

The Minister noted that border security has already improved, in particular thanks to effective cooperation with NATO partners and the use of their aircraft.

According to the head of the Defense Ministry, the main task is to secure the entire border for remote monitoring with minimal involvement of military personnel.

Previously, Latvia has stepped up security measures around key critical infrastructure sites due to the threat of Russian sabotage and hybrid attacks.

The decision to strengthen the protection of critical infrastructure was made based on intelligence data.
