Italy will provide Ukraine with a third SAMP/T air and missile defense system as part of its eleventh military aid package, Formiche reports.
The new package reportedly includes 400 M113 armored personnel carriers, ammunition, and an additional SAMP/T system — a key asset for countering persistent Russian missile strikes.
Italy will also continue supplying satellite reconnaissance support to monitor Russian troop movements, using its aerospace infrastructure in coordination with NATO.
If confirmed, this would be the third SAMP/T system delivered to Ukraine.
The first system was jointly provided by France and Italy, with deployment announced in June 2023 after a February agreement.
The second was delivered solely by Italy, included in a May 2024 package and confirmed by the Italian defense minister in September 2024 to arrive “by the end of the month.”
Based on previous delivery timelines, the newly pledged system is expected to be operational in Ukraine by autumn 2025.
The Italian version of system is mounted on Iveco M320 or ACTL HD8 trucks. A full battery includes four mobile launchers, a radar unit, and a command post.
The modern version of the Aster 30 Block 1 missile, currently used in SAMP/T systems, can intercept aerodynamic targets up to 120 km away at altitudes up to 25 km. It can also engage tactical ballistic missiles with ranges of up to 600 km at a distance of up to 30 km.
A new generation, the Aster 30 Block 1 NT, is under development and is expected to extend the engagement range to 150 km and enable interception of ballistic missiles with ranges up to 1,500 km.
