The Griffen jet-powered interceptor drone, developed by British-Ukrainian company Firebolt Engineering, has shot down a Russian Shahed (Geran-2) kamikaze drone for the first time.
Firebolt Engineering confirmed the achievement, saying it marks the first verified instance in Ukraine of a Shahed-type drone being destroyed by a jet-powered interceptor drone.
The company explained that the Griffen was developed in response to the emergence of jet-powered loitering munitions in Russia’s arsenal.
Newer versions of these unmanned systems fly at more than twice the speed of earlier versions, which had a maximum speed of approximately 180–200 km/h.
As a result, Ukrainian forces have nearly half as much time to detect the target, identify it, and make an interception decision.
Under these conditions, propeller-driven interceptor drones are finding it increasingly difficult to catch high-speed targets, particularly at high altitudes or in environments with intensive electronic warfare (EW) activity.
Meanwhile, employing expensive surface-to-air missiles to engage large numbers of low-cost drones is economically inefficient.
Griffen is a jet-powered fixed-wing unmanned aircraft capable of speeds exceeding 350 km/h, operating at altitudes above 7,500 m, and covering distances of up to 120 km. It is launched using a dedicated catapult launcher.
According to its developers, the platform establishes a new class of counter-UAS capability: jet-powered interceptor drones that combine high speed with significantly lower operating costs than surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems.
The Griffen fills the capability gap between propeller-driven interceptor drones and conventional air defense systems.
“The battlefield in Ukraine is accelerating the evolution of air defense. Griffen was developed to solve a specific problem: providing a fast, scalable, and cost-effective way to defeat Shahed-class threats without relying on expensive surface-to-air missiles. The first confirmed combat interception is significant proof of the platform’s effectiveness and of the strength of UK–Ukraine defense cooperation,” a Firebolt Engineering spokesperson shared.
Following the successful combat deployment, Firebolt Engineering has begun scaling up Griffen production, expanding the supply of propulsion systems, strengthening service support, and increasing the system’s integration capabilities.
The company stated that its top priority is meeting Ukraine’s operational needs. Firebolt believes that the Griffen will also be in demand among NATO countries and other partners.
The next stage in the platform’s development will involve integrating it into layered air defense networks and expanding its autonomous capabilities.
The company is working on the development of a medium-range jet-powered system designed to conduct strike missions.
