The German Ministry of Defense has prepared three proposals for the possible restoration of military service conscription in the country.
Tagesspiegel reported on this.
Proposals range from streamlining the current procedure to introducing compulsory service for men and women.
According to the report, the first proposal does not envision compulsory service, but rather optimization, where information materials are sent to adult citizens who have to fill out questionnaires voluntarily.
The second option, according to media reports, proposes to oblige only men to fill out a questionnaire and possibly undergo a medical examination, while for women this procedure should be voluntary.
The third model, prepared by the German Ministry of Defense, if implemented, would require all men and women over the age of 18 to fill out an online questionnaire and then perform military or alternative service.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius should soon make his proposals to change the government’s policy on this issue.
The German parliament is also currently discussing the possible resumption of conscription of young people for military service.
Politicians from the governing Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU) have noted that they are open to discussions on the issue.
Previously, Andre Wuestner, Head of the Union of the Bundeswehr, called for putting on military registration all fit for active service Germans amid Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine.
Militarnyi reported that Germany canceled the conscription in 2011, however, the security situation in Europe in recent years forced the current Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius to study the possibility of bringing the involuntary service back.
The German Armed Forces recently received the first Boxer heavy armored personnel carrier, produced in Australia.
