NATO will establish a new command unit in the Finnish city of Riihimäki, which will specialize in telecommunications and information technology.

This was reported by Yle.

This center will be NATO’s third headquarters in Finland and will begin operations in early 2027. Local authorities plan to turn the city into a kind of Silicon Valley for the development of modern defense technologies.

The main task of the unit, which will operate under the leadership of the NATO Communications and Information Systems Group (NCISG), will be to provide communications and IT services to alliance troops in Finland and neighboring countries.

Specialists will create mobile communication systems that can be easily and quickly deployed in the field thanks to their convenient container format.

Finnish Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen noted that the creation of such a unit will significantly strengthen the defense capabilities of the entire northern territory of the alliance and consolidate the status of the Riihimäki garrison as the main center of competence for control systems.

The new structure will create 60 jobs for Finnish specialists. Employees will start work next year in temporary premises, the availability of which played a key role in favor of the city when choosing the location.

The construction of a permanent base on the territory of the garrison is planned to be completed in 2029 with partial funding from the alliance.

Together with the DEFINE Innovation Center, this decision will attract new defense companies and investments to the region.

The new IT center will work in synergy with two other alliance structures in Finland. Mikkeli is home to NATO’s Multi-Corps Land Component Command (MCLCC), the headquarters of the Northern European Land Forces, while Rovaniemi hosts the Multinational Staff Element (MNSE) of NATO’s Forward Land Forces (FLF).

Finland’s integration into the alliance’s military structures is taking place against the backdrop of the large-scale Cold Response 2026 exercise, which has just started in northern Finland, Norway, and Sweden with the participation of 25,000 military personnel from 14 countries.

Earlier, Militarnyi reported that Finland determined the permanent location of NATO’s Forward Land Forces headquarters. It will be the city of Rovaniemi, the administrative center of Lapland.
