In Finland, a legislative amendment regarding the involvement of reservists in protecting the state border has entered into force.
The Finnish Border Guard noted that the involvement of reservists is intended for situations where border security is seriously undermined.
Such situations include the so-called directed migration or the spread of infection.
The change in the law is a response to the emergency situation on Finland’s eastern border.
With the change in the law, it will be possible to organize military training to maintain border security as soon as possible.
The procedure applies only to the Border Guard Service reservists. They will be contacted in August and September.
The report said that reservists called up to help Finnish border guards may perform duties such as border surveillance, patrolling, traffic control, and logistics tasks.
The draft law also proposes to change the requirement that conscripts be sent at least three months in advance to participate in training exercises, and if it is about securing Finland’s borders, the notice will be sent 30 days in advance.
The Finnish Border Guard currently has about 2,500 military personnel, and another 7,500 people are involved in border security in other agencies.
Since last fall, the Finnish government has restricted traffic across the border with Russia due to the influx of migrants.
In April, Finland kept its border with Russia closed indefinitely to counter the hybrid migration crisis.
In June, it was reported that Russia deployed most of its military and equipment, which was concentrated at the border with Finland, to Ukraine.
