According to open sources, the 43rd Fighter Aviation Regiment of the Russian Air Force is based at the airfield in Novofedorivka, which mainly includes aircraft Su-30SM, Su-33 and Su-24М bombers.
The military airbase in Novofedorivka is located near the city of Saka in occupied Crimea. Before the annexation of the peninsula, the 10th Naval Aviation Brigade of the Ukrainian Navy was based there.
In 2014, the Ukrainian servicemen managed to evacuate aircraft from the airfield. The crews succeeded in moving two An-26s, three Mi-14s, one Be-12, and one Ka-27 into the air and flying to Kulbakino. 4 days later, another Ka-27PS was moved. On March 9, 2014, the airfield was captured by the Russian military with the support of two Mi-35M helicopters.
Hero of Ukraine Igor Bedzai led the process of removal of equipment. In 2014, he was acting commander of the 10th Naval Aviation Brigade of the Navy of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The title of Hero of Ukraine Igor Bedzai received posthumously. He died in May 2022 during a combat mission, as part of the crew of a Mi-14 helicopter from a Russian fighter missile.
In June 2022, Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded the 10th Naval Aviation Brigade of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine the name of the Hero of Ukraine Colonel Igor Bedzai.
