EU to discuss additional €5bn military aid to Ukraine

The ambassadors of the European Union will consider the possibility of providing Ukraine with additional military assistance in the amount of 5 billion euros in the near future.

Radio Liberty correspondent reported on this, citing a draft document.

It is noted that the European Union intends to provide Ukraine with 1.5 million large-caliber artillery rounds, air defense systems, long-range precision missiles, and drones.

It also includes support for restoring the brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, including training and military equipment.

The decision under discussion covers achieving the objectives ‘in part by channeling further support to Ukraine’s defense industry, including relevant initiatives linking the EU and Ukrainian defense industries.’

The EU ambassadors’ meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, 18 February, in Brussels.

The draft text of the decision states that ‘the European Union will provide military support to Ukraine for as long as necessary and as intensively as required.’

The EU recalled that since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, the European Union has provided €134.5 billion in assistance to Ukraine, including €48.5 billion in military aid.

Reuters previously reported that the administration of US President Donald Trump plans to push European countries to purchase more US weapons for the Ukrainian Defence Forces.

According to the media outlet’s sources, this is one of several ideas being discussed to potentially continue supplying weapons to Kyiv without spending significant US budget funds.

Recently, Defense Minister Rustem Umierov shared that Denmark has already delivered most of the promised F-16 fighters to Ukraine as part of military aid. The remaining combat aircraft will be delivered to the Ukrainian Air Force in the near future.

Norway will also allocate approximately NOK 1.2 billion to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense. These funds will be used to purchase relevant equipment from the United States through the JUMPSTART mechanism.
