The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, has proposed a package of urgent military aid to Ukraine totaling €40 billion.

It includes the supply of weapons, ammunition, and other forms of support.

She made this announcement at a press conference following the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels on March 17, as reported by European Pravda.

Kallas emphasized that her initiative for providing Ukraine with €40 billion in military aid had garnered broad political backing from EU countries.

“Regarding Ukraine, there is broad political support for the defense initiative of €40 billion. Of course, now the discussion is about the details. At the last European Council meeting (on March 6), we concluded that we need to move forward quickly with this initiative, and we have worked on this issue somewhat,” she said.

She also added that “everyone present at the table understood that we must have demonstrated our determination right now and supported Ukraine so that it could defend itself.”

Military aid from the EU

On March 7, it was revealed that several EU countries would allocate an additional €15 billion in support of Ukraine.

This was announced by European Council President Antonio Costa following the EU summit in Brussels. Costa assured that the EU was committed to increasing its support for Ukraine.

It is likely that this €15 billion will either be part of the €40 billion initiative or serve as an additional contribution.

“Immediately, member states can increase their support thanks to the increased fiscal space. Several member states have already announced their pledges up to €15 billion,” Costa noted.

He also mentioned that EU leaders had instructed the European Council to urgently work on further initiatives to address Ukraine’s immediate military and defense needs.

According to Costa, the total amount of assistance from the EU to Ukraine since 2022 has already surpassed €135 billion.
