A drone crashed in Germany near a military airfield outside Hanover.
Drone debris was found near Lake Steinhuder Meer in Lower Saxony late on Monday, September 14, BILD reported.
Police are conducting a large-scale operation to search for additional drone fragments.
Because of the large search area, police deployed a large number of officers. The area is open and unpopulated. Law enforcement officers had to make their way through tall grass and bushes in marshy terrain.
The Wunstorf military airfield is located about one kilometer from the crash site. It is home to A400M military transport aircraft operated by the German Air Force.
It is currently unknown who owned the drone. Its intended purpose has also not yet been established.
The drone may have belonged to Russian saboteurs. Recently, German investigators determined that an employee of Russian military intelligence had organized a drone attack on Leipzig/Halle Airport.
