Denmark is planning to purchase JUMP 20 vertical takeoff and landing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to enhance its intelligence and surveillance capabilities in the Arctic and North Atlantic.
The relevant procurement notice was published on the official website of the Danish procurement and logistics organization DALO.
According to the agreement, a 10-year framework agreement was signed with AeroVironment subsidiary Arcturus UAV and its Danish representative Glaucus ApS for the supply of JUMP 20 drones.
“Today we are signing the first order for new drones, but with this agreement we ensure that we can purchase additional drones if the need arises. We are also confident that the drones we will purchase will be at the forefront of technological development,” said Lieutenant General Per Pugholm Olsen, Chairman of FMI.
Deliveries of the drones are scheduled to begin in 2025.
JUMP 20 is a tactical reconnaissance drone developed by AeroVironment. It has the ability to take off and land vertically, which makes it particularly effective in conditions of limited space and lack of prepared runways.
The UAV has a maximum takeoff weight of 97.5 kg, can carry a payload of up to 13.6 kg and stay in the air for more than 14 hours. The range is up to 185 km and the maximum flight altitude is over 5100 meters.
Previously, the US Army chose JUMP 20 to replace the RQ-7B Shadow unmanned system. The $8 million contract is intended to pay for one complex, which includes six aircraft, ground data terminals and ground control stations.
The procurement of these drones is part of Denmark’s broader strategy to strengthen security and expand military capabilities in strategically important Arctic regions.
The Danish government plans to invest $2 billion to strengthen its military presence in the Arctic and North Atlantic, including the construction of three new Arctic ships and the purchase of additional long-range drones.
Intelligence capabilities will also be enhanced through satellite surveillance and ground-based assets to improve situational awareness and intelligence gathering in the Arctic and North Atlantic.
As previously reported, Ministry of Defence of Denmark will increase the defense budget to strengthen Greenland’s defense capabilities. The strengthening of Denmark’s defense capabilities in the Arctic is due to the statements of US President Donald Trump, who stated that Greenland was an absolute necessity for US defense.
