Denmark and Sweden have expressed their readiness to facilitate the supply of American weapons to Ukraine through NATO.
US President Donald Trump said on Monday that the United States will sell weapons, including Patriot missiles, to NATO countries so that they can transfer them to Kyiv.
Speaking to reporters at the European Council headquarters in Brussels, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said that his country is ready to purchase American weapons to be transferred to Ukraine, Euractiv reports.
“I am proud to say that we are the largest donor of support to Ukraine per capita. So, of course, we are ready to do this,“ Rasmussen said, adding that ”this is in line with the so-called Danish model.”
The Danish model is a mechanism of direct support for Ukraine’s defense industry. According to Denmark’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, the country has provided about 9 billion euros in military aid and about €867 million in civilian aid.
Rasmussen explained that although Denmark does not have its own Patriot systems, the government is “leaning towards it” and is ready to “provide funds” for the purchase of air defense systems.
“We have to agree on the details,” the minister emphasized.
He also noted that Trump’s recent statements on Russia and Ukraine are “very, very important for making decisions on arms transfers, as well as for shaping sanctions policy.”
His Dutch counterpart, Kaspar Veldkamp, said that the Netherlands is considering participating in this initiative “with a positive attitude.”
“We will analyze Trump’s statements and take further steps,” he said.
Sweden will also join efforts to increase arms supplies to Ukraine.
“We welcome the US decision to strengthen sanctions against Russia and to provide the possibility of supplying Patriot systems and other weapons to Ukraine. Sweden will do its part,” said Swedish Defense Minister Pal Jonson.
However, he did not specify the details of this support.
Previously, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte told reporters during a meeting with the U.S. President Donald Trump that an agreement had been reached to supply arms to Ukraine. According to him, the United States agreed to sell significant amounts of weapons to NATO allies for further transfer to Kyiv, taking into account its own defense needs.
The day before, Trump said that the United States would provide Ukraine with missiles for the Patriot air defense system to protect it from Russian attacks, as, according to him, Putin “says nice things, but in the evening he bombs everyone.”
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also said that Germany could purchase Patriot systems from the United States and then transfer them to Ukraine.
