On the night of Friday, October 3rd, at approximately 1:45 a.m., 15 unidentified drones were circling the Elsenborn military training ground in the Belgian province of Liege.
The incident was confirmed by the office of Belgian Minister of Defence and Foreign Trade Theo Francken and reported that an investigation into the circumstances of the flight of those drones was underway, several Belgian media outlets reported simultaneously.
Interestingly, the drones were spotted by accident – at that time, the base was testing a UAV interception and identification system.
Thanks to this equipment, it was possible to track the flight of all 15 drones. It is believed that they could have taken off from Belgium and subsequently crossed the border into Germany.
Elsenborn is located near the German border and covers an area of about 28 square kilometers.
This is one of the largest training camps of the Belgian army, where, among other things, shooting exercises are held in specially protected areas.
The drones were also spotted by the police in the German city of Düren.
It is not yet known who is behind the launch of the drones and for what purpose they were in the border airspace.
The day before, on October 2nd, 17 flights were canceled at Munich Airport due to drones flying in the restricted area, affecting about 3,000 passengers.
Recently, similar incidents have been reported in Scandinavia: in eastern Sweden, unidentified drones were reported flying near a naval base.
On September 29th, a drone was spotted in Norway over the Equinor gas field in the North Sea.
An F-35A fighter jet of the Royal Netherlands Air and Space Force, tail number F-027, belonging to the 313th Squadron, recently recorded the first destruction of a Russian drone.
