The European Commission today began allocating €3.9 billion as the first payment under the first tranche, bringing the total to approximately €6 billion.

These funds are intended for the purchase of drones, according to the European Commission’s website.

According to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, these investments will help Ukraine protect its citizens, defend its sovereignty, and strengthen Europe’s security, which will stand firmly with Ukraine for as long as it takes to achieve a just and lasting peace.

This payment follows the first tranche of €3.2 billion, which the Commission allocated to Ukraine on June 25 under a special macro-financial assistance program. Subsequent payments will be made in the coming days in accordance with Ukraine’s payment requests until the first tranche for drones is fully covered.

The allocation of funds is part of a larger Ukraine Support Loan totaling €90 billion, which provides €30 billion in budgetary assistance and €60 billion in defense support over 2026 and 2027.

In 2026, €28.3 billion from the defense package will be allocated to bolster Ukraine’s defense industry capacity.

In accordance with the Regulation on the Ukraine Support Loan, the Commission is currently reviewing the submitted contracts. These reviews ensure that financial assistance is used for procurements agreed upon with the Commission and member states, and future disbursements, in addition to drones, will cover ammunition, missiles, and air defense systems.
