Volunteers from Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, as part of the Baltic Convoy initiative, will deliver about 80 vehicles to the Armed Forces of Ukraine for Ukraine’s Independence Day.
The Estonian publication ERR reported on this.
On the morning of Friday, August 22nd, a convoy of vehicles set off from Tallinn. On the way, vehicles prepared by volunteers from Latvia and Lithuania will also join the convoy.
The event is dedicated to the anniversary of the Baltic Way and will conclude in Kyiv on August 24tg, Ukraine’s Independence Day.
The Estonian convoy of 11 vehicles was prepared by the volunteer organization SAB.UA. Among the vehicles are a jeep, a truck, a couple of ambulances, and even a former fire truck from the United States.
Vehicles that needed repairs were fixed and prepared for various frontline needs. Some of the vehicles will be sent directly to the front line.
“I’m keeping track of what’s happening. And I believe these vehicles will be very useful at the front. They are all different, designed for various tasks – transport, evacuation of the wounded, different types of cargo transport, including evacuating other vehicles. I think they will be very helpful,” said volunteer Lauri.
At noon on August 22nd, the Baltic Convoy arrived in Riga, where it was greeted by the Ukrainian ambassador to Latvia, Anatolii Kutsevol. Volunteers from the Biedrība ‘TEV’ team joined the convoy. Instead of the planned 10 vehicles, they prepared nearly 30.
On the morning of August 23rd, Lithuanian volunteers with about 40 more vehicles will join the convoy in Kaunas, Lithuania.
In March 2023, the Latvian Saeima unanimously approved amendments to the law allowing the free transfer of vehicles confiscated by the state to the ownership of the Ukrainian government.
Overall, as of early March 2025, within this initiative, the Latvian Ministry of the Interior has transferred 676 confiscated vehicles to Ukraine.
In April 2025, a similar initiative was also introduced in the Czech Republic. The Prague City Council decided to transfer vehicles from impound lots that nobody claimed to the Ukrainian army.
