A 21-year-old Hungarian citizen, Aser Benjámin, who fought as a volunteer in the Ukrainian Defense Forces, was killed in battle with Russian forces.

This was reported by the Hungarian publication Telex.

Acer Benjamin, born in 2004, was a contract soldier in the Hungarian armed forces, but in March 2023 he failed to report for duty and criminal proceedings were initiated against him. According to the publication, Acer informed his superior that he had been going to fight in Ukraine.

According to unconfirmed information, Aser Benjámin served in the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade. He was killed in battle against the Russians while serving in this unit shortly after his 21st birthday.

We know that Hungarian diplomats are also working to bring Aser’s body home. At the same time, his father, Aser Nátán, who lives in Canada, would like to bury his son in Kyiv or Toronto. He cannot travel to Hungary because he fled to Canada in the late 2010s due to political persecution.

“He loved military equipment and military strategy, and was already drawing tanks at the age of eight. I would like Benji to be buried in Kyiv or Toronto. But definitely not in Hungary, because then I won’t be able to visit his grave. Another aspect is that Benjámin clearly sided with the Ukrainian people through his actions and decisions; given the known legal consequences, he would obviously never have returned to Hungary. That is why I have expressed my intention to bury my son in Kyiv. Benjámin’s heart and soul were connected to Ukraine and the Ukrainian people,” said the father of the deceased volunteer.

In March 2025, it was reported that the number of foreign volunteers joining the Ukrainian Defense Forces had increased following statements by the Trump administration. Most volunteers made this decision not only because of their outrage at American policy, but also because they understood that Ukraine needed people and weapons to stop the Russian army.

“It’s unpleasant to sit and do nothing when you know you can do something right,” said William, a 25-year-old volunteer from the US, explaining his decision to join the Defense Forces.
