Vietnam Begins Mastering Fiber Optic Drones
News

Vietnam’s defense industry has unveiled its latest advancements, showcasing a new range of loitering munitions and FPV fiber optic drones.

The QPVN national military channel released a report on the cutting-edge drones, as noted by researcher Lee Ann Quann.

The Z131 factory, operating under the General Department of Defense Industry and renowned for its expertise in manufacturing mechanical devices and munitions, has delivered the samples of FPV drones equipped with fiber optic data transmission systems for military trials.

The drones themselves structurally replicate the basic technical solutions involving the unwinding of a cable from a spool suspended on the drone, a design seen in both Russian and Ukrainian devices.

Factory employees revealed that to reduce production costs, the drones are assembled using ready-made components.

In addition to unmanned systems, the Z131 factory also manufactures munitions, including fragmentation and shaped-charge grenades for grenade launchers. Therefore, if needed, the drone armament can be completed at the same facility.

In addition to FPV drones, this plant also produces more sophisticated locally developed strike drones BXL.01 and QXL.01, which Militarnyi previously reported on.

The BXL.01 features a fuselage with an X-wing and an external configuration similar to the typical design of loitering munitions widely used globally.

The drone has a maximum takeoff weight of 10 kg, a maximum operational altitude of 1,000 meters, and a flight speed of up to 100-120 km/h. However, its operational range is limited to just 10 km.

In contrast, the QXL.01 is a copter-type UAV with comparable size and weight characteristics. It can reach flight speeds between 60 and 80 km/h and operates at altitudes ranging from 150 to 500 meters.
Both drones are equipped with a 1.2 kg shaped-charge warhead capable of penetrating up to 250 mm of homogeneous steel armor.

A few months earlier, Vietnam unveiled its own VSM-01A anti-ship missile and VCS-01 Truong Son coastal defense system built on its base.
