The United States is considering supplying Tomahawk cruise missiles to NATO countries for potential transfer to Ukraine under the PURL support program, but the final decision rests with Trump.

Reuters reported on this, citing an interview by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance on Fox News.

Vice President J.D. Vance explained President Donald Trump’s recent shift in attitude toward the Russia-Ukraine war by pointing to the human cost and the impact on Russia’s economy.

“The Russian economy is in ruins. The Russians are not making significant gains on the battlefield. Clearly, the time has come to heed his passionate call to sit down at the negotiating table and engage in serious peace talks,” J.D. Vance said in the interview.

He also noted that the U.S. was considering a request from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, along with “a number of requests from Europeans,” to sell Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine. This would likely take place under the PURL support program, whereby the U.S. sells weapons to other NATO countries for subsequent transfer to Ukraine.

J.D. Vance refrained from giving a direct answer on whether he would support sending long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine. He stated that it was a matter on which the final decision would be made by the U.S. president.

“What the president will do is what aligns with the best interests of the United States of America,” he said.

Additionally, the vice president stated that Russia had refused to engage in any form of negotiations to end the war.

“What we have seen in recent weeks is that the Russians have refused to come to the table for any bilateral meetings with the Ukrainians. They have refused to participate in any trilateral meetings. Many people are dying, and they have little to show for it. How many more people are they willing to lose? How many people are they willing to kill for a very limited, if any, military advantage on the ground?” Vance said.

As previously reported, during a closed session meeting with the U.S. President Donald Trump at the UN General Assembly in New York, Volodymyr Zelensky allegedly made a request for long-range missiles.

Later, the President of Ukraine personally confirmed on the Axios show that he had indeed raised a request for additional weapon systems for Ukraine during the meeting with the U.S. president.

According to him, the main argument in favor of such a decision is that it would increase the likelihood of a ceasefire.

“Such high-tech weapon systems will help Vladimir Putin come to the negotiating table to discuss a peace agreement,” said the President of Ukraine.
