The White House has threatened Ukraine that it will stop supplying the Ukrainian military with weapons and intelligence if its leadership does not sign the 28-point peace plan proposed by the United States.
This was reported by two Reuters sources with knowledge of the situation.
One of the sources told the news agency on condition of anonymity that Washington is demanding that a framework peace agreement be signed by next Thursday, November 28.
The new White House plan, prepared by US Special Envoy Steve Vitkoff with the participation of Russian Presidential Envoy Kirill Dmitriev, envisages the transfer of Crimea and Donbas to Russian control, a reduction in the size of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Ukraine’s refusal to join NATO, and a ban on the deployment of foreign troops.
The head of Ukraine agreed to discuss the provisions of the document, but outlined “the fundamental principles that are important for the people of Ukraine.”
Subsequently, Ukraine’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Kristina Gayovishyn, said during a Security Council meeting that the US plan violated Kyiv’s “clear and unshakable red lines” regarding the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the state.
She added that Ukraine will not agree to the alienation of its territories or to restrictions on its right to self-defense, including the reduction of the army, or to a ban on choosing alliances independently.
“We will never recognize – neither officially nor in any other way – the territory of Ukraine temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation as Russian. Our land is not for sale,” she said.
According to The Wall Street Journal, European leaders are already developing their own proposals for a peace treaty, which should be ready within a few days.
Earlier, the United States Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Mike Volz, said that America is capable of imposing additional economic sanctions and will continue to supply Ukraine with weapons if Russia continues to ignore calls for a ceasefire.
The ambassador emphasized that Ukraine is approaching the fourth winter since the full-scale Russian invasion, called diplomacy “the only way to a lasting and just peace” and stated that “both Russia and Ukraine must agree to a ceasefire.”
