The Trump administration is actively negotiating with Iranian opposition groups and Kurdish leaders in Iraq to provide them with military support.

Several informed sources shared this with CNN.

Iranian Kurdish armed groups have thousands of fighters operating along the Iraqi-Iranian border, mainly in Iraqi Kurdistan.

Since the start of the war in Iran, several groups have published statements hinting at imminent action and calling on the Iranian armed forces to switch sides.

According to one of the interlocutors, on Tuesday, March 3, Trump held talks with Mustafa Hijri, the president of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan.

This party has become a target of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

According to an Iranian Kurdish official, Iranian Kurdish opposition forces are expected to take part in a ground operation in western Iran in the coming days.

“We believe we now have a great opportunity,” the source said.

Three other sources said Trump also called Iraqi Kurdish leaders on Sunday, March 1, to discuss the US military operation in Iran and possible cooperation with the Kurds during the mission.

One knowledgeable source explained that the idea is for Kurdish forces to distract Iranian security forces and create conditions in which unarmed Iranians in large cities could take to the streets without risk of being shot, as happened during the January riots.

Another US official noted that the Kurds could help sow chaos in the region and deplete the Iranian regime’s military resources.

Another idea was for the Kurds to capture and hold territory in northern Iran, creating a buffer zone for Israel. However, one of the interlocutors stressed that US intelligence assessments consistently indicate that Iranian Kurds currently do not have sufficient influence or resources to support a successful uprising against the government.

In January, the Kurdish opposition in Iran postponed plans to invade the country amid statements by US President Donald Trump in support of a “peaceful” scenario for overthrowing the Ayatollah regime.

At that time, Iranian Kurdish commander Sairan Gharoli noted that the wave of protests gave the opposition hope for the possible overthrow of the repressive regime that had taken hold after the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Iran’s attacks on the Kurds

The Kurds are one of Iran’s national minorities, living mainly in the north-west of the country in regions known as Iranian Kurdistan.

The region is also home to Iraqi Kurds, an ethnic group living mainly in northern Iraq in Iraqi Kurdistan.

Iran suspects some Iraqi Kurdish groups of supporting the Iranian opposition Kurds and organizations. In recent days, the Iranian military has been actively striking Kurdish forces.

The Iranian publication Tasnim News Agency reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps destroyed the positions of enemy “counterrevolutionary groups” in Iraqi Kurdistan.

It was noted that these Kurds intended to infiltrate Iranian territory.

On March 1, it was reported that combat aircraft were being used against Kurdish forces.
