The United States has launched the next phase of testing for its Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) program, according to the US Air Force.
This phase focuses on integrating weapons systems and conducting flight tests of the YFQ-44A using inert munitions – non-explosive mock weapons designed to replicate the weight and aerodynamic properties of real combat missiles.
Such tests enable assessment of the drone’s ability to safely carry payloads and verification of its structural integrity and aerodynamic performance.
These unmanned aircraft are intended to serve as “wingmen,” flying alongside both new and existing manned fighter jets, including the F-35.
The Air Force believes that a single manned fighter could control more drones than originally anticipated, using simpler autonomous technologies.
By 2029, more than 150 CCA aircraft are planned for deployment, operating on both reconnaissance and combat missions alongside fifth- and sixth-generation aircraft.
