The United States has ordered a large batch of new AMPV armored personnel carriers to replace the M113s that were transferred to Ukraine.
Military observer Colby Badhwar reported on this.
According to him, the US Army is seeking to enter into an additional contract with the US branch of BAE Systems to purchase 309 additional AMPV armored personnel carriers.
The additional purchase will be funded by additional appropriations for Ukraine, aimed at replacing US military equipment being transferred from the warehouse.
The new armored personnel carriers will be ordered for fiscal years 2025, 2026, and 2027, with an increase in production volumes from 81 vehicles in 2025 to 122 in 2026 and 2027.
The US Army has placed a $754 million order with BAE Systems for the second phase of serial production of AMPV tracked armored vehicles.
The second phase is scheduled to begin in 2026 and end in 2027. The exact number and variants of vehicles to be ordered under the second production phase have not been disclosed.
The U.S. Army is seeking a total of 2907 AMPVs, including 522 M1283 armored personnel carriers. In addition, 790 M1284s will be ordered for medical evacuation, 216 M1285s for medical assistance, 993 M1286s as command vehicles, and 386 M1287s as self-propelled mortars.
Militarnyi previously reported that in March 2024, the US Army received the first prototype of the FIFT self-propelled mortar based on the AMPV tracked armored personnel carrier.
The combat vehicle is equipped with a remotely controlled Finnish Patria NEMO combat module with a 120-mm mortar.
This made it possible to expand the number of platform versions along with the M-SHORAD variant, presented in October 2023, which is designed to combat air targets.
The promising combat vehicle is called the External Mission Equipment Package (ExMEP).
