US military hackers have conducted offensive and defensive cyber operations in support of Ukraine.
European Pravda reported about this with reference to CNN.
The Commander of United States Cyber Command Paul Nakasone confirmed that the US military’s hacking unit has conducted offensive cyber operations in support of Ukraine as it defends itself against Russia’s invasion.
Such operations underscore the importance of projecting power in cyberspace for the Biden administration. Its main goal is to support Ukraine’s defense and potentially deter Russia from conducting cyberattacks against US infrastructure, while Washington continues avoiding direct battlefield confrontations with Russia.
“We’ve conducted a series of operations across the full spectrum; offensive, defensive, and information operations,” General Nakasone said.
The command declined to elaborate on what the US Cyber Command’s operations in Ukraine have entailed.
A representative of the Command also refused to specify what American military hacker operations in Ukraine have led to.
It’s rare for US military officials to publicly acknowledge hacking operations that are often shrouded in mystery.
Previous hacking operations of the Command have included knocking a Russian troll farm offline during 2018 US midterm elections and targeting ransomware operatives who threaten US organizations.
As previously reported, in December last year, the United States and the United Kingdom sent their specialists to Ukraine to prepare for a Russian cyber attack.
US officials declined to describe the cyber teams sent to Ukraine. A spokeswoman for the British government said that aid to Ukraine provided by Britain and its allies was of a defensive nature.
None of the governments provided details, but officials said that the US was considering greater deployment, including its Cyber Command resources.
