The United States and Iran, with the participation of a group of regional mediators, are discussing the terms of a possible 45-day ceasefire.
Such a ceasefire could lead to the end of the war, Axios reports, citing sources.
The publication’s sources believe that the chances of reaching an agreement within the next 48 hours are low, but this is the last attempt to avoid a serious escalation.
According to sources, the United States and Israel have already prepared a plan for massive strikes on Iranian energy facilities.
In response, the publication suggests, Iran would carry out strikes on the energy infrastructure of Persian Gulf countries.
Axios sources note that Donald Trump has extended the deadline of the ultimatum for Iran to give a final chance to reach an agreement.
On the evening of April 5, Trump posted a message without any explanation: “Tuesday, 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time.”
Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey are acting as mediators in the negotiations.
The talks are also being conducted through correspondence between Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
According to one source, in recent days the Trump administration has presented Iran with several proposals, but Tehran has not yet accepted any of them.
On April 4, Trump stated that “hell would rain down” on Iran within two days if Tehran did not agree to a deal and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The following day, the U.S. President posted an even harsher message, calling Iran’s leaders ‘crazy freaks’ and saying that if they did not reopen the Strait of Hormuz, they would ‘live in hell.’
At the end of March, Ukraine also offered assistance in unblocking the Strait of Hormuz.
