United Kingdom Designates Military Units for Deployment in Ukraine

The United Kingdom has designated military units for a possible deployment to Ukraine once hostilities cease.

Defence Secretary John Healey said that Britain has updated its plans to send troops to Ukraine as part of the so-called ‘Coalition of the willing’ – a group of 30 countries led by London and Paris – following readiness checks and familiarization visits to Ukraine carried out over the summer.

The military leadership has determined which personnel they will deploy and where their headquarters will be located.

“We’ve carried out reconnaissance missions in Ukraine, so we know which units we will use, how we will deploy them, and what role they will perform,” Healey said.

The minister emphasized that the plans will be coordinated with allies and adapted to the conditions of any future peace settlement.

The UK is preparing to spend more than £100 million to cover the initial costs of sending its troops to Ukraine if a ceasefire agreement is reached.

France and the United Kingdom are currently the main initiators of the Coalition of the willing and seek to take a leading role in its deployment in Ukraine.

Although the UK is among the countries that have expressed readiness to station troops in Ukraine after a peace agreement is reached, it intends to position its personnel far from the front line.

In July, Britain and France stated that, if a peace agreement is concluded, multinational forces would be deployed to Ukraine. A coordination center is expected to be established in Kyiv, led by a British two-star officer.

This group is expected to provide logistics, weapons, and training experts to help reform Ukraine’s Ground Forces and ensure the patrolling of its airspace, which would allow international air travel to resume.

The plans also call for expanding the Black Sea task force – which includes Turkey, Romania, and Bulgaria – to carry out demining operations in the sea and ensure safe maritime routes to and from Ukraine’s ports.
